SCHMITZ & HOFFMANN architectes sàrl. - Current work

As of being promoted to a full charge job at the office, I will present some projects I am currently working on.

Hospice for Omega 90 asbl.

First of all, the offices' puppy, the Hospice (a home for people with no hope of being cured from deadly diseases) for Omega 90 in Luxembourg city. The main challenge with designing this project is definitely talking and thinking about dying. Giving people their last home for a time with themselves, their friends and family is also about hope and warmth, and in this particular circumstances, conceptual architectural thinking is reaching its limit, confronted with deeper feelings.

Another interesting point about this project is the fact that last year euthanasia has been legalized in Luxembourg, and this project by Omega 90 stands as an alternative, and is a positive evolution in our current relation with death, illness and hospitals. The final word would be that since the public debate about euthanasia a powerful taboo (death) has been broken.

Public spaces in Luxembourg-city

A long long time ago, ... well now its being build. The "place du parc" and its sourrindings in the popular quarter of Bonnevoie is getting reshaped. Ideas like shared spaces (cars, cycles and pedestrians) are using the same ground, with a speed limitation of 30, boundaries are shaped only by landscaping and materials. Different squares get different functions in coherence with their size and proportions...

The "zero architecture" defined traditionally by roads, places, squares etc. becomes the substrate of the city, open, continuous and for everyone to use.
